External Doors for Unheated Properties
For unheated properties such as barns, summer houses and garages, you can use external door gear without a seal, if it is externally rated. The best systems for these properties are any of the ‘Eternal’ systems, such as the Eternal 130 (rated up to 130kgs per door), Eternal 180 (up to 180kgs per door) and the Eternal 250 (up to 250kgs per door).
External Doors for Heated Properties
Heated properties such as houses, conservatories, indoor swimming pools, etc. will require an externally rated door kit as well as a sealing kit, which can be purchased as an add on. Bottom rolling kits such as the SF-70 or the SF-150 are the best for these properties as they have 4 points of contact ensuring the seals work correctly to keep out the elements.
Sealing Kits
Sealing kits are recommenced to be used on our bottom rolling external sliding systems such as the SF-70 and the SF-150 for any heated buildings. A seal kit includes a compressible seal for the perimeter of the sliding door, as well as a full height interlocking seal on the back edge which locks between the fixed panel and the sliding panel (see diagram) and creates a seal. It is important to ensure you have a good door frame which is designed to be use with seals, generally speaking you would have to create your own frame.
Locations and Conditions
When buying external sliding door gear, it is important to think of the location of the door, for example if it is in a windy location, or if you live by the sea the air will be saltier, we recommend one of the Eternal systems for salty environments. For colder, inland locations you can use the Perlan system which is internally rated and heavy duty. With a nylon body and stainless steel bearings, the Perlan system has been successfully used outside.
