Handles for Sliding Doors
The best handles to use with sliding doors are pull handles, or flush pull handles. These are two different types of handles.
Flush Pull Handles
Flush pull handles can be used on both timber and frameless glass sliding door gear. For timber doors, they are designed to recess into the door furniture, so they are ‘flush’ to the surface. Whereas for glass doors, they are narrow, they don’t project far off the glass and can often still slide in to a pocket, or next to a wall. These handles also work well for pocket doors, as they do not add any depth to the door and still allow the door to slide into the pocket without sticking out of the wall, reducing the opening size. Edge pull handles are also good for pocket doors as they are fitted to the edge of the door and can be used easily when the door is slid all the way into its pocket, when the flush handles cannot be reached.
Regular Pull Handles
Regular pull handles come in two shapes, ‘T’ handles which look like a letter ‘T’ and ‘D’ handles, which look more like a letter ‘D’ when fitted. These then come with two different fixing options, ‘bolt through’ which comes supplied as a single handle with bolt through fixings, and ‘back to back’ which are supplied in pairs, and come with back to back fixings meaning both handles will be in the same position on both sides of the door.
Locks for Sliding Doors
Locks on sliding doors work differently to locks on standard hinged doors, because of the way the doors open. Sliding door locks cannot have a straight bolt, they need either a claw or a hook bolt to hold the door to the frame.
Bathroom Locks
Bathroom locks for pocket doors come with a thumb-turn which is integrated into a flush pull handle, allowing a door to slide fully into a pocket.
Frameless Glass Locks
For frameless glass locks, you will require a notch cut out of the glass to allow the locks to be fitted. These locks are not completely flush to the glass; however they are still narrow, so you would just need to check the amount of space you have. Frameless glass locks are available on both a key version, and a bathroom turn version.
